They didn’t learn at the seminar table, or through lessons with a “master” composer or visits to the new music festivals, and they addressed a different audience than the one we usually associate with avant-garde music.

I’m looking forward to exchanging ideas with you about the concept of the “vernacular avant-garde.” Do you want to start by telling us how you conceived of this concept, and, broadly, what you mean by it?īP: When I finished my Henry Cow book, I wanted to develop a concept that could help think through the situation of many of my musical protagonists, those who worked outside of the university or conservatory system as well as the mainstream recording industry-or, at least, within a highly charged relationship to it. Please feel free to get in touch with me about any questions regarding the Choral Journal index. We are currently working in making this available in an electronic format it is currently only available in hard copy from our archives here at the office. This index is a guide for searching articles in issues published between 19. There is also an index for the first 18 volumes of Choral Journal, available as ACDA Monograph #3, edited by Gordon Paine. This index is current from volume 19 through 56. You can view the Choral Journal index by clicking here or by going to the ACDA homepage, clicking “Publications –> Choral Journal –> Search Archives and there you will see a link. Those interested in submitting an article for consideration to Choral Journal should search the index first to see if we have published an article on this topic in the past. Scott Dorsey has done a wonderful job updating the Choral Journal index for each new volume year, and I personally use it regularly to find articles of various topics of interest. This weekly ChoralNet blog occasionally includes a highlight from past articles, and you can find many of these by going to the “CJ Replay” tag. Some of these are admittedly out of date and no longer useful, but there are so many treasures to be found that still have relevance to choral conductors in the twenty-first century. The Choral Journal index is a useful resource that is available to ACDA members to be able to easily search articles dating from the present to May 1959.
